To diagnose Asthma & COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), firstly Pulmonologist reviews your asthma & COPD symptoms, medical as well as family history and also perform a pulmonary function tests which is also known as lung function tests.

Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) is one of the most accurate and advanced diagnosis methods to understand the severity of diseases as well as to determine treatment path.

This is the simpler, common and effective breathing test for diagnosing COPD and Asthma. This tests measure how much air you can breathe in (inhale) and how quickly you can blow it back out (exhale). It shows the amount of airway obstruction. Patient has to take a deep breath and exhale into a hose attached to a device known as Spirometer. Spirometry measures many different volumes i.e. how much & how fast the air moves. Some of the common measurements done by Spirometry include a test called as FVC (Forced vital capacity).

This test is less accurate than Spirometry. It measure how well your lungs push out air and can be done at home.

This test is also known as provocation tests. There are three major types including Exercise challenge test, Irritant challenge test and Methacholine challenge test.

It is also called as the exhaled nitric oxide test. If patient is suffering from allergic or eosinophilic asthma then it can help to show how much inflammation patient has and how well inhaled steroids are keeping it controlled. In this test, patient has top blow in to a handheld device that measures the amount of nitric oxide in the breath.

If you are suffering from shortness of breath, consult the doctor and undergo lung function test immediately.
