WHAT IS ILD (INTERSTITIAL LUNG DISEASE)

Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) is a group of large number of disorders that cause inflammation or scarring (fibrosis) of the lungs. The scarring or inflammation causes stiffness in the lungs which makes person difficult to breathe. ILD can be associated with Myositis. Some major types of ILDs include:

• Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis
• Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis
• Sarcoidosis
• Asbestosis

ILD can be caused by exposure to hazardous chemicals, certain medications and medical treatments. Shortness of breath and dry cough are very common symptoms of ILD.

Timely diagnosis and treatments are very important because ILD is progressive and can even cause life threatening condition. Treatments can’t reverse lung damage but they can slower disease progression and help to breathe more easily.
